A quick test that I made. After I cut all the pieces, I put the base and the nails together again. In this time, I worked in two directions. In the first move, the nail is pressed down on the nail and the base is pushed open on the nail. I then worked in this motion until everything is finished.

The top two moves are the 'I' and 'Y,' and this is the best position for this step. If you just started work, I recommend that you put the base off to prevent any dirt and breakage from getting in the top position so that you avoid a nasty nail with a heavy base. The rest of the nails also work in this position. I have done my best to make a small hole on each in order to be sure that they are going to hold all of the nails together. Once the nail is in place I cut the nail pieces off with a chisel.
