The first line of defense for these new, high-density houses is that in some cases they appear to have been built over-used on the existing land. When asked by CBC News what kind of use is appropriate, many New Yorkers said the same thing, describing the original construction as "pretty terrible as they are." City officials have said they are happy to be on the side of the federal government, which has built some very high-value residential complexes in New York. They say they aren't taking any chances with their efforts to increase affordable housing. But they are worried the federal government, which owns all of the land in the city, will take a hit because it's holding up buildings approved to build affordable housing.
