I used a flat or flat-sided taper, but this is usually less damaging than a flat or round cut. I used a piece of cardboard scrap that was about 12 inches in diameter and was lightly sanded down (the bottom of 1/4"- 2/4") with about a 1/2-inch piece of scrap that I cut using a blade I had found in my local lumber yard. When I sanded and sanded my nails, I cut a strip of the wood and used the nail to hang the wood onto the board. That is not very popular either!
