I prefer the long side down so they can be attached without crushing the nail. If you only want to use a short side down, then get the full length of your nail on the flat point where it meets with the flat edge of your nail. The one thing I learned from myself is that you often don't even need to do these lengths before you have a problem with getting them to fit correctly.
