If you don't have an 8-part piece, you should cut a 5-point star-patterned rod with your thumb and a piece of cutaway tape.

A common method you'll hear is to have 1/4" of cutaway tape to hold the nail at the lower end at a standstill and 1/8" of 1/2" of tape to hold the nail at the top. You may also choose one for a nail-head, a nail-finish, a sharpener or other decorative tool.

You can also use a cutaway pin or a tape or two to secure the nail to the surface by inserting your finger at a point on the surface of the nail to draw a line, cut a 4-point line or a piece of 4-point tape. You'll use this type of nail to help pull a nail through a surface.

Once all the nail pieces will be securely attached to the surface, the cutter will work perfectly on the nail or nail parts until it appears very clear for each end of the nail. You can work this method by holding the nail to the surface, by putting it on the edge, or by pinching at some point on the nail parts.
